Sitemap – What is a sitemap?

A sitemap is a small file that contains a list of all the URLs or pages that make up a web page. The format of a system is .XML, but it can also be created in .TXT text format or TSS web fonts.

The size of a sitemap usually does not exceed 50 MB or 50,000 URLs. Although this is a high number, many websites can easily exceed it. In these cases, it is possible to use different sitemaps to upload all the content to Google.

With the Google Search Console tool you can tell Google what the sitemap files of a web page are.

Benefits of AMP for your website

By submitting a sitemap to Google or other search engines such as Yahoo, Bing or Ask, you are helping their crawlers or spiders to index the content in their website databases. By providing a hierarchical list, indexing of the content of a web page is improved.

A sitemap includes the websites that you want to index, leaving out those URLs that are not interesting to include in the search engine index, because they are not relevant to searches.

Providing a sitemap makes Google take less time to index a new website, or new content added.

How to create a sitemap

If you want to position your website, it is very useful that you know how to create a sitemap manually using .XML data tags and YTD-8 encoding. However, the usual way to generate this type of files is to use specific programs such as:

  • Create a sitemap in WordPress:  There are various WordPress plugins or add-ons for creating sitemaps, such as Yoast SEO or Better WordPress Google XML Sitemaps, which generate this type of files automatically.

  • Create an online sitemap: Online tools such as XML-Sitemaps or Sitemap Generator allow you to create the sitemap of a web page from your online platform, generating the file with the site’s URLs, which can later be sent to Google.

  • Create sitemaps with software: GSiteCrawler is an application for analyzing web pages, providing useful information about them and automatically generating the sitemap.

As you can see, these small, easy-to-create files allow you to quickly add the content of a website to Google and other search engines, making the work of crawling spiders easier so that they can find your page and index it in its rightful place.
